What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, hands-on technique used to support the Lymphatic system in circulation of fluid through the body. It is especially beneficial when used for post operative recovery.

2

How does Liposuction affect the Lymphatic System?

The surgical procedure of Liposuction to remove excess fat from areas of the body, can impact the Lymphatic system which is responsible for draining fluids and fighting infections.
Liposuction can impact the blood and lymphatic vessels, cells and connective tissue, causing lymph fluids to accumulate. The lymphatic vessels in the adipose tissues can be negatively affected however are capable of regenerating. When the lymphatic vessels are damaged it can lead to build up of lymphatic fluid (swelling) and this can influence the end result of the liposuction.

Correct aftercare is integral in the optimal recovery of the lymphatic vessels and function of the lymphatic system so that the best cosmetic results can be achieved.

Potential complications without correct lymphatic care can include Fibrosis (hardening of the area), swelling, inflammation and infection.

How can Manual Lymphatic Drainage assist with recovery from Liposuction?

The treatment supports the bodies lymphatic system and promotes optimal recovery from the procedure; reducing the recovery time and likelihood of complications such as hardening, swelling and inflammation, as well as improving the end results of the contouring procedure.

4

When can I start Manual Lymphatic Drainage, and how often must I do the treatment for best results after my Liposuction?

Your Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) sessions can begin 5 to 7 days after your procedure, with an initial 90minute session. The initial session provides adequate time for proper consultation, assessment, treatment and removal/re-dressing of any compression garments. Your follow up treatments will be either 60 or 90minutes in length, depending on the areas being treated and the body's response to the treatment.

Your first week of MLD will consist of 2 to 3 treatments.
Your second week of MLD will consist of 1 to 2 treatments.
From there onwards, your MLD sessions will be 1x per week until optimal results are achieved.
The typical MLD treatment programme will consist of 6 to 10 treatments - treatment packages are available upon request.

What else can I do to support my Liposuction recovery process, alongside my Manual Lymphatice Drainage treatment?

You can also include foods in to your diet that are naturally anti-inflammatory and that will support your lymphatic system.
