Pre & Post Surgery Massage

Pre-surgery

Stress management - Any surgery no matter how routine is stressful, so having some hands-on therapy from the care of a massage therapist can help relieve some pre-surgery anxiety. As well as stress relief, pre-surgery massage helps to lower blood pressure, heart rate and helps stimulate those feel-good hormones.

Sleep support - As with feeling stressed, pre-surgery anxiety can keep you from getting restful sleep, receiving a massage is a great way to calm the mind and prepare the body for sleep. Sleep plays a vital role in recovery, the benefits of massage for sleep quality go a long way, especially before surgery.

Immune System Support – Research studies have shown that massage can help the white blood cell count in the body, which help fight off infection – a necessity after surgery.

Post-surgery

Studies have been done showing that massage can be beneficial after surgery, especially in the case of cardiac patients.

Sleep support - Getting good quality sleep after a surgery can be challenging

As stated above, sleep is vital for recovery, massage is well documented in contributing towards falling asleep faster, staying asleep longer and getting deeper sleep. Even after leaving the hospital, getting massaged regularly will help speed the recovery process.

Wound healing/reduction of scar tissue - By increasing lymph circulation and blood flow, massage can help speed healing and reduce swelling. Getting scar tissue treatments regularly will prevent scar tissue build up and help the scar regain elasticity. Massage work on the incision site/scar tissue can help to reprogram the use of the muscle cut in to and promote functional movement through the body. Scar tissue can take months to develop so it is important to maintain a routine of massage well after the surgery.

Pain management - After surgery pain is to be expected, the long, gentle strokes of massage can help manage and alleviate pain. Massage decreases cortisol, the stress hormone, and increases serotonin and dopamine, which assists pain relief.

Massage helps to limit inflammation from going past the beneficial recovery point (I.e once enough inflammation has occurred to heal the tissue, it stops further inflammation that is then detrimental to the recovery process).

Flexibility and ROM - Massage therapy can be a very beneficial addition to a physical therapy regime, for some types of orthopedic surgery.
